Description: Wunga Island is a palm-fringed tropical paradise island off the coast of Afulu sub-district. What is special about Wunga is the large protected lagoon in the middle of the Island. The turquoise coloured water of the lagoon is a great place to swim and snorkel. The north side of the lagoon has one of the most beautiful beaches anywhere on Nias. The Island is quite large; 5 km long and 1.5 km wide. Wunga is sometimes marked as two separate Islands on old maps. Due to a powerful earthquake in 2005 the two Islands was uplifted and joined into one, creating the large lagoon in the middle. A few families live here, tending the coconut plantation on the Island. Snorkelers and divers can enjoy some spectacular underwater scenery just outside the entrance to the lagoon. Most people come here on daytrips from Afulu, but it is possible to arrange with locals to camp here.

Getting there: The best way to get to Wunga Island is to arrange a boat from Afulu Harbour. The distance from Afulu to Wunga Island is 17 kilometres and the trip usually takes 1.5 hours by local boat. When you get to Wunga, enter the lagoon from the opening on the east side of the Island. Be careful as there are many shallow rocks here; sailing boats usually anchor just outside the entrance to the lagoon.
